Cuentos de Gata/ Cat Tales
I'll do my best to translate all the cat tales into English. Poetry might be a little off but I'll get my point across.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I haven't written much in the past half a year; life has been happening and I've been living it. It's all material, right? Magic comes in cycles. Sometimes magic is there, holding you by the hand, through every step you take and sometimes, magic is watching from the distance, pretending to be gone, making you believe it's never coming back – far far away in a corner within yourself – just so you prove once again that you can make it on your own, that life will go on, but that life is better lived with it. Today I'll write about when change happens. In the past year I've changed a lot, my circumstances have changed a lot, my relationships with friends and with life have changed, and even more so with death. I moved out of my apartment and in with my partner and it's been beautiful and hard as joining forces with another evolving soul can be. We opened and closed a business. We flew up north to see the most fantastic occurrence I've ever experienced before, a total solar eclipse from a raw valley, naked, against the crystal filled ground -ocean tears, moon tears too- and most importantly my partner and I chose to join our lives in our own version of marriage on 7 Kan (mayan calender date- also, October 1st, 2017), and in the mists of all this forward walking, life has thrown some hard and marvelous life lessons at me: Two babies died because sometimes it happens that way. And as midwives, we live it in a hidden way, because it's not our baby to mourn. But loss hits as loss does. “Talk to your baby” (I wrote about this in an earlier blog) I said, earlier than I ever had to before, trying and hoping and fighting that with that divine door closing weapon baby would stay while we rushed to the emergency room, holding with my gloved covered hand this baby's head in, so oxygen would keep going through. And mom did, as only she could, talk to her baby boy. And as if heaven had fallen upon us, or as if we all had gone up there, a sense of calm in some of the longest seven minutes of my life came to me, as I heard her say: “Baby... these... have been... the happiest... nine months... of my life... thank you”. I did not mean that when I prayed “talk to your... baby”. But that was what had to be said. Because this was something we all needed to hear as we refused to let that baby go. I have never fought much with death, as death comes only when death must, but in that moment and in the following hours death was something else, death was then a cord prolapse, death came in the shape of a situation that happens once in ten thousand births. Death was slow and infinitely fast and then it was gone leaving a flowery smell behind. And I then, saw magic in a really hard way, after a long time watching me from a distance, she came out for a few moments that day. I learned that the mother-child bond is greater than even I knew. That grief when lived properly comes to heal you, and to teach you. And yet my mind suffered: I could have delivered nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine babies and could have never had this happened but at my one hundred and fifty something's birth with one of my loveliest families, it did. So life has been happening. In my stash of “Important Letters Never Sent”, there is one specific letter that starts like this: “So there is this feeling that I believe has no name... it's the choosing for yourself, it's then letting go of something that won't really end. Cutting the cord and being left with the scissors in your hands. It's a bit of guilt, a bit of fear, a dash of wonder, a dash of emptiness and a whole lot of hope and dreams. I'm feeling nostalgic in a way I've never felt before”. I believe this is the sorrow that comes from change, a sort of grief that doesn't completely belong to you. Maybe it's a grief that's felt with someone else, without knowing that the other someone is feeling it too. I believe change must come to save us from our selves. We are like water, - we are mostly water- and as such if water doesn't engage in movement, if it stagnates, it rots. This is not a sad piece, it's a piece of hope and love. It's a reach out to all people specially midwives who are and forever will be, mourning someone else's baby or babies. It's a reach out to everybody living in the harsh magic of change. It's an I see you, and an I feel you. Because every time a pregnancy ends too soon for one reason or an other, every time a baby decides not to stay, we live all the pains of those previous losses over again... There is a reason in Spanish midwives are called “comadronas, matronas, comadres”(co-mothers, mothers, pal-mothers) this word comes from commater (Latin) meaning: “Together with mother”. We midwives mother with our women, and as mothers we mourn their children more often than not, in silence. There are smaller grieves, just as present. There is an unwanted sorrow of walking forward, of growing. There is a hard to understand-sorrow of leaving behind those who choose not to keep walking, and yet you keep walking forward. There is this beautiful grief of looking back and recognizing the steps you've taken to get to where you are now and there is one even more beautiful which is looking next to you as you lay tired on the couch, and feel at your feet that warmth that tells you that you are not alone anymore, that this might just be that grief that's felt with someone else, and that this, too, shall pass... Making myself tiny, shiny too. To travel through this warm and tired body. Bringing light to every corner so that no surprises arise later on. Bringing light into death, and into life. So to travel light. As light as one can travel with this heavy and tired hands. Heaven-facing palms always, ready to catch all that, that life might send, softly, gratefully.

Aplicamos otra dosis, nada. -------------------------------------------- Kame Of course, every birth has an infinite and different magic, each perfect birth teaches us that childbirth is a natural and safe event, and it is. Giving birth is physiological process, that if left alone will progress as it should, at earth's rhythm. But earth occasionally has weird plans for the bringing of a child to the world, and that is when midwives and sometimes doctors are necessary. Midwives are guardians of birth. We are there to let the woman have her baby as she needs to, without intervention. We are there to guide her and her family through it while helping them find their own answers to the existential questions that are born in the process of labor and to make sure that everything remains normal and safe. The world stops for a second as it welcomes the child every time. But there are births that change one's life, and these are often them most challenging ones, or the ones that push us even farther away from our comfort zone, sometimes this are too, the most magical ones... Maybe those deliveries prepare you for something bigger that is coming. Several months ago we attended the birth of a family in the forests of Guatemala. First baby, healthy mother. Very excited mom waiting for her daughter since she planned her pregnancy. Dad a Tata Maya, here “Tatas” are the spiritual guides, with special connection to the gods, Nahuales. The pregnancy went well, baby growing as it should, uncomfortable but happy mom. This baby took her time, she was born a few days after her due date but nothing out of the ordinary. As the birth approached, one could see mom's face and her energy change as she surrendered to become a mother, she let go of the mind and let the body take over to give birth. Less doubts, less fear and more desire to birth. It is normal for the process of becoming a mother to be difficult and silent, only those who have seen it happen over and over again know what it looks like... sometimes it happens once the child is in the mother's arms, and hides behind the "baby Blues”. It's a mourning that deserves to be lived. To leave behind the individual independent woman and to accept one's self as a guardian of life. Sometimes it's lived in pregnancy, sometimes in childbirth, sometimes in the postpartum period and if it's not lived, if you refuse it, if you hide it, if you shut it up, it hurts. This particular mother, I believe lived it at the end of her pregnancy, she let go of control, as a protective mother must do to raise her offspring. And only then could she begin her labor. We arrived to her house one morning. The coolness of the trees, the rain. She, with her doula and her partner, swayed in front of a very powerful altar that Dad had prepared for the delivery. I could feel the weight of this altar in the room. An invitation for the gods, the candles, the corn, the obsidian stared into my eyes, recognizing me. -Obsidian is protective, defensive and reveals messages from the cosmos, from memories, from universal knowledge-. Mom was doing well, progressing but she still had to open more. There were four of us accompanying the mother in a small room so I decided to go out to the living room. It was cold in that divine house in the woods, so knowing that there was still time before the birth I lay down on the couch to rest a little. Every midwife knows that one does not really sleep while there is a birth in progress. It's a light nap, like the one that the security guard takes standing by the door. We hear what's going on, and we'll decide if it deserves attention or if we get to rest a little longer. I knew when she got into the tub, when she came out, when she used the “rebozo” to squat, when she needed water; but I was asleep. I had been lying on the couch for a little over an hour, perhaps, when someone knocked on the door and I saw Hannah (my mom and boss) opening it and letting in this elderly woman who wore deep blue and who had black hair with silver lines of wisdom down to her middle back . I thought she was the grandmother of the baby, and she could have been for all I know. I knew at that moment that she was coming to see the woman who was birthing. My mother said: "She, who is on the couch is my daughter. Czarina (the mother) is in the room. " Following this, the woman came directly to me, sat on the sofa with me and lifted my head so it would rest on her lap and while she stroke my hair she whispered things in a language I do not know, nor have I ever heard. She had a calming touch as if I had known her for ever, like she had a message for me. It felt like she was not there to see me but was glad to find. I could feel her needing to come do this to me. We heard Mom making some sound and she got up and went to look for her. I got up behind her. We walked to the room where they were laboring and I knew the woman wanted to see her. When we crossed the door I was suddenly alone entering a large body of water, knowing that I had to go through it. It was clean, with lots of water plants around me and I went in. I woke up at the sound of the doula coming towards the living room. It took me a few seconds to realize that this visit had happened in another time, in another dimension to put it somehow. I sat on the sofa for a few minutes, confused. And I saw that my mother was coming. I said, "Mom, sit with me, I need to tell you something. First, did anyone come?" She said no. I went on to tell her what I had experienced just a few minutes before. "Maybe it was Efra's mom (the baby's dad)," I said, "I don't know." We left it there when we heard Czarina moan loudly and went to see her. She was in the corridor holding onto the “rebozo” so she could squat, Efra was holding her from the back. And so she continued her labor surrendering to each contraction just how it should be, allowing the body do it's job, until at some point she was ready to push. By then Czarina was in laborland (I will tell about this destination later). Her body was her guide and she followed without hesitation, so it wasn't long until we could see her body opening and letting Qaxilu out. I stood up to face her so I could take pictures of the birth. When I stood up, I had this thought: "Everything will be okay with the baby." -I know that it seems like a simple thought, one of hope and confidence. But I knew at that time that everything was going to be okay with the baby, with the baby. Not with Mom-. When one thinks those things, those thoughts that come from nowhere, those crazy ideas, the first instinct is to think that one is making it up. That one does not know what will come in the future, that one must stop bringing those energies. But no, you are being warned. -"Be prepared for something is to happen”-. I kept taking pictures of Mom pushing, her baby coming out, Dad's smile while feeling the head of his baby for the first time, while still between two worlds. And finally Qaxilu , calmly, was born into the arms of her mother. Pink, breathing perfectly, without crying like if she knew that mom was still busy. The cord stopped pulsating quickly, and my mother was preparing to receive the placenta, after Dad cut the cord. Effortlessly, the placenta came out. And behind it, more than a liter of red, dark, liquid blood, warm and opening way with authority. I left the camera aside and asked my mother if she needed medication to stop the bleeding. She said yes and that it was urgent. -You must understand that this mother had no physical reason to bleed like this. In a healthy birth the woman is expected to bleed less than 500 ccs and by then she had lost already three times this-. We applied the necessary medication, and nothing changed. The bleeding did not stop. I had never seen this before, my mother in more than 1,700 births hadn't either. It is not something that happens often and less in a first-time, healthy, conscious of her body, prepared woman. We gave her another dose. Nothing. My mother told me: “Put on other gloves, fast. I need you to hold the uterus between your two hands”. -A bimanual compression of the uterus is a technique that is used as a last resort when a womb is not contracting not even with chemical medications-. I held her uterus between my two hands and forced it to react. Every few seconds I felt it relax and then I felt the warm blood reach my elbows. I thought, and silently asked the angels and mother earth to please stop the bleeding. Mom was now lying down, and she never lost consciousness. She was very calm. And I spoke to her constantly, saying, "If you get dizzy, let me know, keep talking to me." "Are you okay?" "Have you seen your beautiful baby?" It's a very special and incredible experience to speak to someone who is fully aware while holding one of their inner organs in your hands, knowing that their life is at risk. Of course in those moments you act calmly, without worrying them more than necessary. I did the bimanual compression for about 8 minutes, while another medication that my mother had given her, took over. Mom was stable, bleeding had subsided, but she had lost about 2,000 ccs of blood. She needed volume to regenerate the blood. We had to transport her, so we decided to take her to our clinic where she wouldn't be separated from her newborn and where she could be supervised and receive the necessary intravenous fluids. We carried her to the car, while someone was dressing the baby. I went back to pick up our instruments and to make sure there were no needles or glass on the floor. I entered the corridor where everything had happened. The blood on the floor, we quickly cleaned it, the blankets heavy with blood went to a basket, I washed my hands in front of the mirror. My skin was tight with dried blood, that had to wait. Adrenaline rushing through my body, steady hands still. I got in the car and with one hand on mom's womb and with the other holding the baby we headed to the clinic. Every so often I asked mom about how she felt, showed her her daughter, put her on her chest so that they would feel each other. On the way, when everyone was calmed, I told the Tata of the magical experience I had with the old lady in blue ... He thanked me for telling him about it and reminded me that it was Kame, on the Mayan calendar. He mentioned that Kame was sacrifice, death; That perhaps the blood that Czarina lost was the sacrifice she had to offer for the life of her child, so perhaps Kame was who visited us... Kame is the owl, death, rebirth; the water. The day of communication of the living with the dead. On this day the communication with superior beings opens and there is access to the dimensional doors. *** A home birth is opted for after the evaluation of each pregnancy, and when it's what both, midwife and parents are comfortable with. In very very rare cases something like this happens, And to be clear what was done here is exactly what would have been done in the birth center minus having to transport. The text was written to share the magic of the birth not to scare anyone away from having a home birth as they are often the best births since mom is in a familiar environment and all she might need is at hands reach. scroll down for the English version
"Hablále a tú bebé". ------------------------------------------------- Parents are unaware of a super power they have. A superpower I hope they never have to use. But it's there, granted my mother nature to guardians of life. Everybody should know that not all babies are meant to stay in this world. Or not all babies get to stay at least. We, as midwives know this very well, and we have to accept that if we work enough, the day will come when we will have to survive holding in our arms an eternally sleeping baby. But this entry is about the ones who do stay, but almost didn't. As I always say, when a baby is born the universe stops for a while as it welcomes the child into the world. This moment is when the child takes it's first breath, when midwives are reborn. When we know we are safe, that baby decided to stay. This moment can play out in various ways. I've delivered a baby who was screaming loudly with only its head out, and one wonders how she even had the room for air in her tightly squished lungs. I've seen a baby be on mom's chest, pink and looking around for minutes before she ever took her first breath, like inside, outside. The placenta choosing to keep on working a little longer, not quite ready to let her baby go. I've seen babies who never scream as birth was so peaceful they never had the need to show their being overwhelmed. I've seen babies who weren't sure they were going to stay; as I've held a child who would not ever take a breath -a baby has a full minute to look “fine” after being born. Babies deserve that whole minute to try to come to life. We don't worry if it takes baby a couple of seconds to land, but if after the first 45 seconds baby doesn't seem to be sure if it wants to stay we start helping it-. And I've seen a baby be brought back to life by his mom's prayer. This is the superpower I'm talking about. “Talk to your baby” is the first thing I say to the parents of a baby who is having a hard time landing. Adrenaline kicks in hard at the beginning of that sentence. Parents deserve this chance of bringing their baby to this world. It's not just about the birth, it's about life; And more importantly, this superpower closes doors to the divine and forces with love the soul of a baby to stay in; way better than any midwife, doctor or machine ever will. “Talk to your baby”, I said a couple of days ago to a tired mother as I handed her her limp purple baby who was tightly wrapped by it's cord. “Talk to your baby” as I stimulated his back. “Come on baby, come on” mom said: He was turning pink as he cried softly. When this baby's head was out he started making grimaces as I wiped his face and waited for the rest of him to come out. -It often takes the uterus a while to know how to get the body out, and this is usually fine-. I checked for a cord wrapped around the neck, I couldn't feel it. Then mom pushed again and baby's face turned blue and the neck had no muscle tone. “This baby needs to come out” I said and looked for the cord again, wondering why baby wasn't coming out, and I found it against the shoulder, thin as a cord shouldn't be. Mom pushed hard. He was out. Unwrapped baby and handed him to mom. “Talk to your baby”. After mom had changed from that awkward position she delivered in and baby was happy and here I waited for the placenta. It was born, heavy to the force of gravity. As I held it in my hands and helped the amniotic sac detach by asking mom to cough, I realized that it was too heavy. A huge clot was inside it, about a litter of blood. This placenta had detached before baby was born. You often get the answers after the facts. Why would this baby who was making grimaces while only head out, suddenly stop? This is why. Why did this happen? Because baby was all tangled in the cord and pulled the placenta apart from the uterus. Let me be clear here, tons of babies are born safely into this world with cord wrapped all over, this a is a weird succession of events that led to the placenta detaching prematurely, we had never seen something like this. One of the biggest fears of any birth attendant, a placenta detaching before the baby is born. Here both mom and baby are at risk of bleeding out. We were lucky for it to happen when it did, and here mom talked her baby to life. A superpower she didn't know she had. Scroll down for the English version-----
No sabia si publicarla... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is my first post on magic and I think that as such I must make it very clear that like everyone, I can only speak from my experience, from my perception of life. I understand that these truths, might only be truths for me, but here they are, and whoever wants to read them is welcome. I must also admit that I have been sitting on this piece for days ... I did not know if I would publish it ... But I came across a soul like mine. Speaking for the first time of this in the original language, we compared metaphors for what I'll explain below. An ageless soul who found herself sheltered in La Antigua Guatemala as well. Magic attracts magic. Any way she encouraged me to publish it, just by being. As I said elsewhere in this blog, there is tremendous magic in addiction, in pain, and in the inspiration that comes from change. Knowing how to see this magic is what my life depends on. We all have a secret pleasure, an addiction, a vice, a taste that we can not have enough from. I was recently asked what mine was. It took me some time to answer this question. I meant to say that I had none, that having vices was not my thing. I wanted to think that because I don't depend on any drugs, nor on some behavior I do not have an addiction. Someone I appreciate a lot, followed the question by telling me, "I do not trust those who say they do not have an addiction." This prevented me from responding with the ease I intended to. I thought, "maybe it's the people, the encounters between strangers". But I've always been better alone. Solitud, is perhaps my best company. I thought of sex as a way of healing, and I spit it out to the world in the digital age as if it were anything, because it is simply one of these things that we don't talk about but that we would all love to talk more about. I understood that although it is part of what I came to understand as my secret pleasure (now perhaps not so secret) is not in itself my addiction. I had to make a trip to the past, between letters I have written and whose vessels never received, between poems buried under altars and between hidden emotions, to realize that my vice is magic. The magic of ephemeral moments. The magic of the penetrating of my soul with another. And here I speak of love, but not of romantic love necessarily, but of love that takes the form of silence, understanding, listening. Magic wears different costumes. Magic dresses up to convenience. I imagine there are others in the world like me( a shout out to the others out there!). That they enjoy giving, that know how to move in the world of shadows, of energey vampires. I am sure that everyone who needs us, us who nourish from handing out energy, will find or have found, perhaps unknowingly, someone like us. It is not easy to be like this, it is a very rare art to give without having expectations, without expecting something in return. I do not pretend to portray ourselves as martyrs, we are not, but rather, not being so is what identifies us. We are morphs, whose pure identity lies in constant change. As abstract as it may seem, the genuine is born of the ability to evolve. I am also familiar with the idea of masks, the attempt of most to paint their face as it suits the situation, to cover with concrete a skin easy to break, to pretend to have thick skin. The difference between these and us - the others - has to do with a genuine interest in providing an opportunity for change and thus offering magic to the world. There are those who are addicted to light, the light of souls, people who have forgotten how to be their own source of it. Energetic vampires, perhaps, they can be called various names and are not necessarily dark beings, just confused beings. There are other addictions, such as pleasure in the world of recreation, drugs, party, sex, art ... Perhaps it is an addiction to art like any other, the art of feeling joy in receiving what the others can give, without asking for more. This does not mean that I am compatible with anyone or that I accept everything that is thrown at me. It means that I know how to be what the other needs and know how to build walls as needed. It also means that I have a preference as to the souls with whom I share myself. -It is extremely important to learn to be happy with what you receive, to need nothing more than what you get-. It is not about comforming; It's about knowing one's self free of wants and thus being really free. My drug is this, giving. To give pleasure, support, sweetness, passion ... to always leave the soul better than how it was when you found it. It is an even greater art to let go of it. To rejoice in the idea that I am not indispensable, in the reality that no one is. I love being able to stand at the edge of the world and accept myself as a tiny, insignificant woman ... vessel of the entire universe. The magic that is lived in Antigua has much to do with that there is something for everyone. There are skins that fit very well together, there are masks that fit very well with each other, there are those who know how to give what others need and there are others who know how to take away what others want to forget. I guess this addiction is a blessing for me, knowing my self as light is very useful in my line of work, in my friendships ... This addiction of mine to seek magic in the daily life has led me to live incredible supernatural events. I will soon reveal the stories of magic and joy that I have lived, and look forward to experiencing others. This blog is largely an attempt to safeguard these experiences and perhaps to encourage the universe to show me more and to live this earthly life with certainty of a magical world.
------------------------- This style of placenta art is the result of my fascination with the placenta. A unique organ for every human being, like a finger print of birth. The tree of life of each soul. Around the world there are different traditions and beliefs surrounding the placenta. "The baby's companion" in Guatemala, not only is the remedy that the woman needs after childbirth but it is a work of art created from the union of two people. Originally Placenta prints are made on watercolor paper with the blood coming form the afterbirth and for a while I made them like that. Over time I realized that the print would deteriorate and fade away and parents would lose this single postpartum canvas so I decided to figure out other ways to provide more permanence. This art pieces are digitally processed and it has several pros. 1. The placenta is less manipulated thus reducing the chance for contamination. 2. It is possible to highlight in more detail the uniqueness of each placenta. 3. because it is a digital print it has more durability and 4. I can keep a file and if someone loses it, they can request another print. Placentas are born The placentas do not come out, they are not removed. The placentas are born. The placenta makes life possible and binds us to the mother. The placentas are born, in silence, soft as to tell the body that it's all over, warm, that the work of giving birth is over, massaging the perineum, soothing it. Placentas are born in silence and no one thinks about them. The placenta responds to the mother and to the child, the placenta pleases. My job is to thank it for life, translating into blank canvases the tree that gave life. Encapsulating it, preserving it's powers, understanding and respecting that each one is different, as different and as important as each child that is born. Check out the services page!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Belly binding is an ancient healing art present in many cultures. It is common in Guatemala as it is in Malaysia, Japan and other parts of Asia, it is also used by the Native Americans. There is a physical component as an emotional-spiritual component in the act of binding one's belly. In the Mayan culture binding one's belly closes the body and protects it after events that open it and make it vulnerable such as massage, childbirth, or emotional traumas. The binder is recommended in the following cases (this is by no means a substitution for medical care):
Takes less time to put on. The Bengkung girdle is originally from Malaysia and looks more complicated to adjust but if you learn it once, you wont forget it. It is a fabric more than 15 feet long that is rolled from the hip to two inches under the woman's breasts. It is more attractive to wear on top of clothing and it provides more support to the body as it changes. Better for pregnancy, as it can adjust tighter. Want one? Write to [email protected] or call +502 30267136 Back to Nature Bengkung girdles are produced locally with a durable, light fabric, don't shrink and they are machine washable, made to last. There is only one size but we take orders for larger sizes. they measures 16.5 yards and are usually large enough for most people. "With a braid it covers my womb perhaps this way l'll find my place.. To the center of earth on a moor with a loom of light it wraps me in lace And with strength and grace it works my sorrows of doom to inhume". |
