I live in Antigua, a town that does not even reach a square kilometer in central Guatemala, over Honduras and El Salvador, below Mexico.
There is much to say about this stone paved paradise of the eccentric and traveling souls but little by little I will narrate what it is like to live here, without getting too much into the Guatemalan culture: there are other blogs about that.
To honor the holy Mayan land along which I walk, I will say this: Antigua was a lake between the spirits of hills and volcanoes, conquered by the Spaniards. After years of exploitation and abuse Antigua was shaken by an earthquake, a response of the Pachamama I want to believe. Now it's a colonial valley, which is colonized by new country every day. Almost no one resides in the center of Antigua anymore because it has become a point for travelers, the curious and the lost, life happens between the Quetzal, national currency and the American dollar. Two main languages are spoken, Spanish and English. There is a mixture of cultures, from the original Maya, to the gringo.
I call it The Antigua Vortex. Maybe it's because there is so much magic in this place, maybe it's the witches, the party, the custom that is confused with novelty or maybe it's none of the above.
It is easy to get to La Antigua, it is very difficult to leave.
